House of the Future
In response to the House of the Future competition’s call for sustainable, climate-resilient living in the UAE, this proposal envisions a villa that fuses traditional wisdom with modern performance. More than a functional residence, it is a habitat that harmonizes with the environment. Rooted in vernacular architecture and passive design, the house reinterprets the Emirati courtyard typology to meet today’s climatic and spatial needs. It breathes — filtering wind through shaded courtyards, harvesting solar energy from the rooftop, and ensuring privacy through permeable façades.
Strategically oriented westward, the villa addresses the region’s intense afternoon sun with passive shading: deep overhangs, vertical louvers, and perforated brick screens reduce heat gain while maintaining light and ventilation. This orientation transforms the harsh western exposure into an asset, enhancing comfort through smart, responsive architecture.
